The Philadelphia Department of Recreation’s Mural Arts Program has launched an interactive Web site where visitors can view 1,100 of the city’s 2,300 murals. MuralBase (www.cml.upenn.edu/murals) was created by the University of Pennsylvania’s Cartographic Modeling Lab as an extension of the city’s Neighborhood Information System, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Site visitors can type in a theme, address, artist’s name, zip code or year to view the murals, and they can view maps of the city’s parks, schools and other areas that contain murals. “The murals are a tremendous source of community pride; they brighten people’s lives,” Marilou Wernecke, managing director of the Cartographic Modeling Laboratory, told the newspaper.
