King County parks facilities might get new names
Facing a multi-million-dollar gap between expenses and revenue, the King County, Wash., Parks and Recreation Department is looking at selling naming rights to county parks facilities. The Seattle Times reported that the department would like to rename stadiums, buildings and other parks facilities Ñ but not the parks themselves Ñ to address what is looking like a $40 million shortfall in its 2002 budget.
The department manages more than 24,000 acres of parks and open space, 200 miles of trails, 17 swimming pools, 52 play areas and more than 200 buildings, according to the paper. Selling naming rights was one of 19 options suggested by the department to increase revenue. It could be taken up by the Metropolitan King County Council on Oct. 15 when County Executive Ron Sims delivers his 2002 budget proposal.
