On April 4, the Port Authority of Allegheny County, Pa., will begin the largest field test of Intelligent Vehicle Technology by a public transit agency in the country. The year-long project will study the side collision avoidance system recently installed on 100 Port Authority buses.
The $1.8 million project is funded jointly by the FTA and PennDOT as part of FTA’s Intelligent Vehicle Initiative program, which is designed to enhance transit operations through accident reduction. The results of the Port Authority’s test will provide operator feedback and will be used to determine the design and function of future systems.
