New facility provides hands-on recycling education
The Rockland County (N.Y.) Solid Waste Management Authority has initiated a recycling education program that includes a new materials recovery facility (MRF). The center, which opened in June, houses a recycling facility, an amphitheater, a hands-on museum and the home base for the environmental education program. The authority is offering demonstrations of recycling and recovery techniques at the MRF.
The authority recently held a recycling art contest for Rockland County grade school students to raise youth awareness for environmental protection initiatives. Students were encouraged to use recycled or recyclable materials in their creations, which took the form of posters, sculptures or paintings. Twenty-one winners were chosen from more than 100 entries. Winning items are on display at the MRF.
