NACo adds volunteerism affiliate
The National Association of Counties has added a new professional affiliate to support volunteerism to meet the rising demand for local government-sponsored volunteer programs across the nation.
The National Association of Volunteer Programs in Local Government is the organization’s 25th affiliate.
In recent years, volunteer programs in local governments have expanded to meet rising service demands and encourage greater civic participation by citizens. Many counties, such as Salt Lake County, Utah; Marion County, Ore.; and Pinellas County, Fla.; now have central offices that recruit and place thousands of volunteers.
“This affiliate is a great opportunity for local government volunteer programs and the field of volunteerism in general,” says Marilyn Kelsey, manager of Salt Lake County’s Office of Volunteers. “NACo, more than any other national organization, has played an important role in advancing the concept of volunteerism in local government, and the affiliate will only strengthen that role.”
The affiliate currently has 60 members, many of whom are volunteer program managers from local government agencies.
Its first meeting will be at the International Conference of Volunteer Administration, Oct. 28 – Nov. 1, in Norfolk, Va. For more information, contact NACo at (202) 393-6226.
