In expectation of a heat wave due to descend on the city this week, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has declared a heat emergency and ordered city employees to conserve electricity. Last month, parts of Queens lost power for more than a week when a group of feeder lines failed, and city officials are worried that the heat wave will overload the still weak system, according to The New York Times. City employees in 53 buildings have to set their thermostats at 78 degrees, and employees who don’t obey the orders could face criminal charges.
