The Contra Costa County, Calif., Public Library installed an ATM-style book-lending machine at a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) commuter rail station this summer. Called “Library-a-Go-Go,” the machine holds about 370 popular paperback titles, which are dispensed with a swipe of a library card and can be returned to the machine when readers are done with them. The $100,000 machine at a BART station 48 miles from the San Francisco airport is the first of a few machines the library system purchased with a Library Services and Technology Act grant to help extend library services to residents. The machine is connected to the library’s circulation system, so it tracks reader activity and fines for late returns.
