Mystery of Pumpkin Town
On Oct. 31, Boone, Colo.’s streets were mysteriously lined with pumpkins. Hundreds of the Halloween icons were found on front porches, church steps, the city park and the concrete parking stops at a local grocery store, according to The Associated Press (AP). Although the mastermind behind the pumpkins remains a secret, Postmaster Nancy Pennington, who is always tuned into the latest happenings in the town, may know who is responsible but plans to remain mum on the subject. “I have an idea, but I’m not sure,” Pennington told AP.
Dying to be elected
In November, Sam Duncan, a candidate for the Union County, N.C., Soil and Water Conservation Board, defeated his competitor with 12,000 votes although he had died one month earlier. Voters were unaware of Duncan’s death as literature distributed near polling locations included Duncan’s name, and promotional ads appeared in the newspaper the weekend before the election, according to AP. County elections officials knew about the tragic news but were instructed not to release such information to voters. “I was shocked to know that poor Sam was gone,” Former Sheriff Frank McGuirt told AP. “I guess I had just missed that obituary.”
