Following an incident in which a 60-ton beam fell from a bridge near Pittsburgh and injured four people last month, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is calling for local governments to inspect bridges built with concrete box beams and topped with asphalt. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the bridges were built in the 1950s and 1960s and may contain weakened prestressed steel rods and cables. Local governments have until Feb. 17 to plan how they will complete the evaluations and inspections, and the federal government will reimburse up to 80 percent of local costs. http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/13745344.htm
