NYC Parks earns LEED Gold for restored building near Yankee Stadium

The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation received its first LEED certification for the newly restored Power House in Mill Pond Park.

The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation received its first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification in December for the newly restored Power House in Mill Pond Park. The $13.7 million, 25,800-square-foot facility — which features a green roof, high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, an energy-efficient heating and cooling system, and nearly 40 percent recycled or locally made building materials — earned LEED Gold.

The Power House, which originally supported the Bronx Terminal Market’s food refrigeration warehouse, was restored and re-opened in March 2010 as part of the Yankee Stadium Redevelopment Project. It currently includes office space for the parks department, a community space and public restrooms, and soon will be outfitted with an indoor café, tennis clubhouse and locker room. The preservation and renovation of the Power House was implemented over three years by NYC Economic Development Corp. with a design team from locally based Stantec, construction management by Syosset, N.Y.-based LiRO, and program managers Los Angeles-based AECOM and Tishman.
