Metro leaders discuss urban issues in Asia and United States
In March, metropolitan leaders and experts from a variety of Asian and U.S. cities met at the Honolulu-based East-West Center for a seminar on critical urbanization issues facing Asia’s cities. During the seminar, directors of city planning from Denver, Miami, San Francisco and Seattle met with officials from Pakistan, the Philippines, Vietnam, India and more.
The three-day seminar was the second in the East-West Center’s URBAN ASIA seminar series. The program examined how urban centers and metropolitan regions are adapting to current economic realities while simultaneously preparing for future growth. The participants shared their long-term strategic visions for managing urban growth, and exchanged ideas and information on best practices, policies and strategies.
Launched in 2008, the East-West Center seminar series facilitates informal, roundtable dialogue to examine the challenges of urban transition and governance using a knowledge-based approach that integrates experience and data, according to the center. Through peer-to-peer exchanges on policy options, participants share and reflect on long-term strategic visions for managing urban growth in the region.
A report highlighting the March seminar proceedings will be available online in the fall, and more information on East-West Center seminars is currently available at www.eastwestcenter.org.
