U.S. Army orders 15 fire trucks from Pierce
The United States Army has ordered 15 Contender custom pumper fire trucks from Oshkosh, Wis.-based Pierce Manufacturing for $5.7 million. The vehicles will be deployed in spring 2010 at Army bases across the U.S.
The contract was structured so each Army base could add options to the base configuration — such as a cold weather package (with engine and pumphouse heater), auxiliary air conditioning, a light mast, and a compressed air foam system — to best fit its unique challenges. All of the trucks come with a 425-horsepower engine, deluge monitor and a foam system, while three feature a 4×4 all-wheel-drive axle configuration. “These custom fire apparatus are built for performance and reliability,” said Wilson Jones, Oshkosh executive vice president and president of its Fire & Emergency division.
