Penton’s American City & County magazine names 11 as ‘America’s Crown Communities’
Penton’s American City & County magazine today announced that 11 cities have been selected as 2009 “America’s Crown Communities.” American City & County presents the awards annually in recognition of outstanding leadership in local government. This year’s award winners are: Alexandria, Va.; Casselberry, Fla.; Chandler and Gilbert, Ariz.; Decatur, Ala.; Dubuque, Iowa; Hillsborough County, Fla.; Mounds View, Minn.; Polk County, Fla.; Richmond and York County, Va.; South San Francisco, Calif.; and West Palm Beach, Fla. A profile of each community’s winning project is featured in the December issue of the magazine and is available online at http://digital-edition.americancityandcounty.com/.
Recipients of the annual awards are selected by the editors of American City & County based on nominations submitted by the magazine’s audience, city and county leaders, and associations. Any local government initiative substantially completed within the last year can qualify for the awards, including those that repair infrastructure, introduce new technology, improve quality of life for residents, or beautify public places. Entries are judged on uniqueness, short- and long-term value to the community, and effective/innovative financing.
“Despite the downturn in the economy, local government leaders produced a record number of winning Crown Communities’ projects,” said Bill Wolpin, editorial director and associate publisher of American City & County. “The judges had a tough time selecting because there were so many outstanding entries to choose from.”
American City & County has been the voice of state and local government since 1909.
