Fists of enlightenment
The Dalai Lama got to experience the lighter side of American culture during a September visit to Memphis.
Mayor Pro Tem Myron Lowery greeted His Holiness with a fist bump and a play on the title of an old song, according to local television news station WMCTV. “I’ve always wanted to say, ‘Hello, Dalai,'” Lowery told the world leader.
In an editorial written for CNN.com, Lowery said he had no regrets about the incident. “His Holiness laughed, returned the gesture and gave me his blessing,” Lowery wrote.
