Milwaukee mayor recovers from attack
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett remained in the hospital Monday with serious head injuries and a broken hand he suffered when attacked by a man involved in a domestic dispute that the mayor was trying to resolve. Police arrested 20-year-old Anthony Peters in connection with the attack.
Barrett was leaving the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, Wis., around 10:45 p.m. Saturday when he heard a woman calling for help, according to Milwaukee Police Department spokesperson Anne Schwartz. When Barrett began calling 911 for help, the male suspect in the dispute attacked him with a pipe.
The attacker, believed to be Peters, fled the scene and was later arrested. Barrett was listed in stable condition. “We’re extremely proud of Tom’s selflessness and his courage,” Barrett’s brother, John Barrett, told Milwaukee television news station TMJ4.
The mayor’s office is expected to post a statement on its Web site at
