NLC backs economic recovery bill
The Washington-based National League of Cities (NLC) is urging Congress to pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan, which passed the House Wednesday despite a total lack of Republican support. The Senate may consider its version of the bill next week, according to CNN.
NLC members believe the plan, which would combine more than $600 billion in spending on infrastructure projects with more than $200 billion in tax cuts, must be passed quickly, saying in their statement that “the consequences of inaction are unacceptable.” “Cities and towns agree with President Obama that we must act boldly and now to turn around the economy and improve our nation’s competitiveness,” the NLC statement reads. “The House’s recovery plan aims to do that by calling for investments in several areas key to quality of life in our communities: direct investment in ready-to-go highway, bridge, transit, airport, water, sewer, housing and energy efficient infrastructure projects; efforts to get credit flowing again; and assistance to vulnerable families.”
