Mayors call for federal economic assistance
Executive Director of the Washington-based U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) Tom Cochran is calling for a “Main Street Stimulus” plan that would direct federal assistance to local governments. “Main Street is hurting,” he said in a statement. “Americans need jobs now, and our economy desperately needs help at the Main Street level.”
Metropolitan economies, which comprise 90 percent of gross domestic product, need help immediately to create jobs, Cochran said. “Simply put, until we stimulate local economies, the national economy will continue to suffer, and we will not begin to see light at the end of this gloomy tunnel,” he said. Cochran points to cities’ transit, energy-efficiency and community development infrastructure projects that could “employ people, support small businesses and stimulate main street economies.”
