This fall, high school students enrolled in Leon County, Fla.’s driver education programs are buckling into hybrid vehicles to practice their skills behind the wheel. The Leon County Board of Commissioners purchased six Toyota Prius vehicles for the programs, which are funded by $3 of every civil traffic fine. The use of hybrids in the high school classes is part of a countywide effort to encourage “greener” living in the community. In 2005, the county board established an energy policy as a top priority and approved 15 strategies to increase energy conservation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
