Recent set fires have inspired officials in Saginaw, Mich., to use state and federal grant money to tear down some of the empty buildings that are the arsonists’ main targets. The city plans to tear down about 90 abandoned homes using $450,000 from the federal Community Development Block Grant Program and, if it is approved, $225,000 from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, according to The Detroit News. There are about 1,600 abandoned houses and other buildings in Saginaw, and the city has torn down more than 200 of them since 2002.
