Farmers Branch, Texas, has become the first city in the state to pass serious measures against illegal immigrants. The city council has passed resolutions requiring apartment renters to show proof of citizenship or residency, and to make English the town’s official language, according to the Dallas Morning News. Hispanic activists vowed to challenge the laws in court, while the council continued to consider further actions, such as penalizing businesses that hire illegal immigrants and denying city subsidies to children of illegal immigrants in some city youth programs.
