Court battle expected over Los Angeles mayor’s school takeover plan
Opponents of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa say they plan to file a lawsuit alleging that a new law that gives Villaraigosa and a Council of Mayors substantial control over the city’s schools is unconstitutional. The basis for the suit is a part of the state’s constitution that prohibits the transfer of control of the schools to any jurisdiction or authority outside of the public school system, according to the Los Angeles Times. Legislators who passed the law, which allows the Council of Mayors to pick the superintendent for the Los Angeles Unified School District, say they satisfied the constitutional requirement by saying that the council is a “local educational agency.”
