Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa may soon have the control he sought over the Los Angeles Unified School District, but before he does the district’s board will appoint a new superintendent. Villaraigosa says he’ll fire anybody the board picks if he doesn’t like them, but board members say that will not be in the mayor’s power, according to the Los Angeles Times. A bill that would give the final approval of the superintendent to Villaraigosa and a board of mayors from cities in the school district is expected to pass but would not take effect until January, after the board appoints the replacement for retiring Superintendent Roy Romer.
