Officials and environmentalists in Madison, Wis., are considering following the lead of Austin, Texas, in banning the use of coal-tar sealants on parking lots and driveways. According to The Capital Times, Austin banned the sealant after conducting a study that indicated it was contributing to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contamination in area streams, causing damage to aquatic life and possibly cancer in humans. Some companies that provide sealcoats say the Austin study on its own is not enough and more studies should be done before other cities also ban the product.
