By dawn’s early light
Stephen Barr, parks and recreation director for La Porte, Texas, took this week's winning picture of the Fred Hartman Bridge at sunrise. The bridge is a major landmark and transportation link that can carry up to 200,000 cars per day over Galveston Bay. The main span of the bridge is 2,475 feet long, the length of eight football fields. More than 40 million pounds of steel -- the weight of more than 16,000 automobiles -- was used to construct the bridge. The double diamond towers supporting the bridge stand as tall as a 45-story building.
