$6.7 Million Funds Projects For At-Risk Youth, Families

The Department of Agriculture has announced $6.7 million to fund 13 new and 33 renewal projects under the National Children, Youth, and Families At-Risk (CYFAR) program.

Since 1991, CYFAR, administered by USDA’s Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, has supported more than 600 communities in every state and territory. Land-grant university Cooperative Extension offices distribute CYFAR dollars to selected at-risk community sites in their states. The federal appropriation has been matched or sometimes exceeded by both public and private funding.

The 13 new projects for 2003 include:

ALABAMA: Auburn University, “Begin Education Early and Healthy: Strengthening Rural Alabama Families” ($149,995)

CALIFORNIA: The University of California, Oakland, “Partners Investing in Teens’ and Children’s Health” ($150,000)

COLORADO: Colorado State University, Fort Collins, “Colorado Organizing for Children: Youth and Families at Risk” ($150,000)

GEORGIA: University of Georgia, Athens, “Georgia Strong Families/Strong Communities” ($142,690)

HAWAII: University of Hawaii, Honolulu, “Networking, Collaborating and Partnering for Effective Community and Family Program” ($150,000)

MASSACHUSSETTS: University of Massachusetts, Amherst, “Expanding 4-H Youth Development in Massachusetts Communities” ($120,000)

NEBRASKA: University of Nebraska, Lincoln, “Communities Together Can” ($120,000)

NEW JERSEY: Rutgers, New Brunswick, “Cultivating Youth and Communities for Positive Futures” ($150,000)

NORTH DAKOTA: North Dakota State University, Fargo, “Building Connections” ($149,765)

OHIO: Ohio State University, Columbus, “Ohio Family and Youth Initiative” ($149,815)

OREGON: Oregon State University, Corvallis, “Oregon New Communities Project: Engaging Latino Youth and Families in Community-based Educational Programs” ($150,000)

PENNSYLVANIA: The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, “Youth Engaged in Technology” ($150,000)

WASHINGTON: Washington State University, Pullman, “Partners in Promoting Strengths” ($140,000)

Thirty-three ongoing CYFAR projects were renewed with $4.8 million of the total $6.7 million.
