Wastewater Treatment Plant in Ellsworth, Maine
In 2002, a fire shut down Ellsworth?s wastewater treatment plant. During this period, the city discovered a cross connection pipe on the plant grounds that allowed untreated wastewater to flow directly into the Union River. This discovery was the beginning of an eight-year process that included intensive fundraising, a contract for plant operational assistance and a consent agreement with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. The process ended with the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, completed in December 2012. Without low interest loans and grant programs, the city would not have been able to construct this plant.
