Franklin Boulevard renovation
The Franklin Boulevard renovation began as a flood and stormwater improvement. The roadway had a history of engineering and safety issues including constant road closures, property damage, drowning incidents and insufficient pedestrian amenities.
Connecting residential areas to downtown, the project focused on installing a box culvert that replaced a hazardous stormwater ditch. This significantly reduced corridor flooding and removed 20 properties from the 100 year floodplain.
All existing utilities along the corridor were upgraded. The roadway was reduced from four lanes to two, with turn lanes at major intersections, bike lanes, sidewalks and a multi-use trail.
This project was made possible by Leon County, Tallahassee and financial support from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Administration and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The total cost of the project was approximately $10.6 million.
