Southern California storm multiplies car accidents
A moderate rainstorm that impacted Southern California caused a massive surge in highway crashes in Los Angeles County, Calif. in a few hours.
California Highway Patrol data show that between 9:00 p.m. on November 20 and 1 a.m. on November 21, 201 accidents occurred in Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles Times reports. That’s a 570 percent increase in crashes compared to the 30 crashes that occurred during the previous period, according to the Times and the Daily Breeze.
Over 100 Los Angeles County firefighters were dispatched to rescue locals that the storm had affected, according to the Times. In addition, power outages affected over 5,000 homes in the area, the LA Daily News reports. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also issued a warning directed to beach visitors to avoid swimming or surfing in areas surrounding storm drains, creeks and rivers.
Despite the surge in highway crashes, the National Weather Service recorded no more than 1.07 inches of rain falling in certain parts of the area, the Daily News reports.
