Solar race
Nearly 70 teams from 19 schools and organizations in and around Long Beach, Calif., competed in the fifth annual Solar Grand Prix, hosted by Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske. More than 400 students, coaches and volunteers participated on race day. Middle and high school students raced solar-powered model cars of their design, challenging students to work as a team, using creative thinking and scientific knowledge to experiment, design and build high-performance model vehicles.
