Cascade Avenue renovation – BEFORE photo
The Cascade Avenue renovation, in River Falls, Wis., was a public works infrastructure project well past due.
It would have been simple to reconstruct an old, deteriorating road like Cascade Avenue in a configuration similar to what previously existed. Instead, leaders from River Falls, The University of Wisconsin – River Falls and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation embarked on a combined effort to identify and address problems associated with the old roadway configuration, and develop plans for a new roadway that would better serve a wide range of stakeholders.
Roundabouts were employed to control traffic, pedestrian crossings were added, stormwater was maintained and additional techniques were applied to safely facilitate automobile, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The total cost of the project was $4.63 million.
