ransportation destination – Hennepin County, Minn.
More than a transportation hub, Target Field Station, located in Hennepin County, Minn., is a destination at the nexus of two downtown Minneapolis neighborhoods. Joseph Scala, a planning analyst for the county?s public works department, says the station was designed according to five ?open transit? principles: integrate all transit modes, orient toward real estate development, create iconic spaces, integrate culture with transit design and appeal to non-transit users.
The station serves more than 500 trains daily as the southern terminus for a commuter rail line and the western terminus for two light rail transit lines. A bus transit center and bike trail are adjacent to the site, as is Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins.
Beyond its transportation functions, a series of interconnected spaces and amenities place the station at the forefront of a new theme: public places that also happen to be transit hubs. A grand canopy provides a new landmark, while a large lawn, plaza, video display and 1,000-seat amphitheater accommodate pregame activities, concerts and other events.
