Miramar Community Garden
Miramar, Fla.
Miramar, Fla., recognizes that healthy communities cultivate economic vitality. With this in mind, the city chose a location adjacent to an elementary school and a youth outreach center to create the Miramar Community Garden (MCG). The park’s intergenerational fruit and vegetable garden was completed in May 2014. It set out to embrace not only cultural and generational diversity, but also bio-diversity, which would boost the vitality of the local ecosystem.
The garden plays host to many educational events. Recently over 100 second graders were treated to a Sensory Education sip and taste program, which focused on developing children’s palates for fresh food. The goal was for children to become active participants in nutritious food choices and to create a generation of informed eaters. These educational programs promote urban agriculture, science, family nutrition and wholesome cooking.
