Gasification plant: Covington, Tenn.
The Covington, Tenn., Waste-to-Energy Gasification Plant is a state-of-the-art facility that converts wood trimmings and sewage sludge to electricity. Energy generated by the plant will be used to offset energy use from the city?s wastewater treatment facility.
Construction began in April 2013 and the facility came online in September 2013. The total cost of the project was $2.5 million, and funded through at $250,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and 20-year municipal bonds.
The plant saves the city costs on landfill tipping fees with 3,600 tons of wood waste and 720 tons of sludge not being landfilled annually.
