Fighting crime with science

To provide Oakland County, Mich., with timely DNA testing services, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard, needed to enhance the capabilities of its forensic science laboratory.
Bouchard and his team planned to build a state-of-the-art DNA laboratory. To ensure success, the experience and resources of the National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC), a leader in forensic science development services, were employed.
NFSTC delivered a comprehensive DNA needs assessment and developed a strategic plan for implementing the DNA lab, which determined the necessary infrastructure, personnel and resources required to successfully operate a DNA analytical program for the growing community.  The scope of work for this project focused on requirements for laboratory infrastructure, processes, procedures, methodologies, quality assurance, training, equipment, maintenance, supplies and staffing.  Process mapping was used to identify key DNA activities, and a business plan spreadsheet was used to establish milestones for successful completion of the project.
