City and County of Denver, Mayor Michael B. Hancock
Denver has been one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. for the last several years and was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the number one place to live in the country in 2016. “As Denver works to meet the demands of a growing city, we’re working to create, protect and rehabilitate affordable housing units,” says Mayor Hancock.
The city’s strategies, says the mayor, include allocating $8 million in the 2016 budget; creating a $15 million permanent, dedicated and sustainable funding stream starting in 2017; modifying the city’s preservation ordinance; and providing tax and fee relief to affordable housing developers.
“I would advise other local governments to examine actions they can take to encourage development and preservation of affordable apartments, rental and for-sale units in their areas, including maximizing the potential behind public and private partnerships,” Mayor Hancock tells GPN.
