Canal Place restoration ?
Piqua, Ohio
In 2012, Piqua city officials, working with Mainstreet Piqua, came together to recapture a public asset ? Canal Place. What was once a non-descript parking lot was transformed with new pavement, rain gardens, public furniture and decorative lighting. In a matter of weeks, a largely overlooked part of downtown was brought back to life.
Intricate funding procedures were needed to make the project a reality. Mainstreet Piqua worked with the adjoining property owners to get commitments of $3,000 per property with frontage along Canal Place. In addition, the city contributed a $20,000 grant for the project. Remaining funds were raised from over 19 businesses and 100 downtown residents. In total, over $35,000 was raised by Mainstreet Piqua for the Canal Place restoration
