VIA Metropolitan Transit in San Antonio has purchased 14 propane-powered American Heritage streetcars from Wichita, Kan.-based Optima Bus. Additionally, METRA Transit System in Columbus, Ga.; Metro Bus in St. Cloud, Minn.; and Ride Solutions in Palatka, Fla., each have purchased streetcars from the company.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation has contracted with New York-based Parsons Brinckerhoff to design improvements for 12 separate secondary route segments in the state. The projects are part of a program that aims to improve safety and reduce crashes on rural secondary routes through low-cost, short-term engineering strategies. The New York State Department of Transportation has contracted with the firm for reconstructing the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. And the Georgia Department of Transportation has contracted with the firm to provide construction engineering and inspection services on construction projects in the Tennille district.
Champaign and Winnetka, Ill., have contracted with Avon, Ohio-based Rich and Associates to conduct separate parking demand and feasibility studies. The firm will prepare a long-term parking plan.
Safe at home
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has contracted with Appleton, Wis.-based Pierce Manufacturing to provide a custom-designed, heavy-duty, walk-in rescue to be used for homeland and port security.
Clallam County, Wash., has contracted with Annapolis, Md.-based ARINC to provide a countywide interoperable communications system.
Larimer County, Colo., has contracted with Lynchburg, Va.-based CTA Communications to provide consulting services for a county communications system study. In addition, the South Central Montana Interoperability Consortium, which includes Gallatin, Madison, Meagher, Park and Sweet Grass counties, has contracted with the firm to provide consulting services. The North East Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission also has contracted with the firm to provide consulting services for a regional public safety radio communications study.
The Denver Police Department has contracted with Lowell, Mass.-based M/A-COM to provide an Internet Protocol-based network for public safety.
Wexford County, Mich., has contracted with Castle Hayne, N.C.-based VisionAir to provide law enforcement software.
Water, water everywhere
The Southern California Coastal Water Research Project Authority has contracted with Alpharetta, Ga.-based MACTEC Engineering to provide environmental monitoring services.
Cle Elum, Wash., has contracted with Houston-based Veolia Water to operate its wastewater plant.
Colony, Texas, has contracted with Chapel Hill, N.C.-based Entex Technologies to provide BioWeb Integrated Fixed Film/Activated Sludge system to expand water treatment capacity.
The Palmdale, Calif., Water District has contracted with Waitsfield, Vt.-based Northern Power Systems to design an energy storage system for its Southern California water treatment plant.
Jackson, Ohio, has contracted with Dayton, Ohio-based Woolpert to provide design engineering services for its water treatment plant.
The American Water Works Association Research Foundation has contracted with Fountain Valley, Calif.-based Carollo Engineers to provide two arsenic removal research projects.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has contracted with Atlanta-based GE Energy to provide GIS consulting services for the city’s water department.

Oregon has contracted with Vernon Hills, Ill.-based CDW Government to provide more than 100 state agencies with laptops and peripherals as part of a price agreement under the state’s Smart Buy program.
Fargo, N.D., has contracted with Aurora, Colo.-based Merrick & Company to provide digital ortho imaging, photogrammetry and GIS mapping.
Wheaton, Ill., has contracted with Madison, Wis.-based Varion Systems to provide geographic information system data and tools to city staff and constituents.
Tennessee has contracted with Atlanta-based Cingular Wireless to provide high-speed wireless data services to all state agencies.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has contracted with Castle Hayne, N.C.-based VisionAIR to provide software for its computer-aided dispatch, law enforcement records management system, mobile data system and field-based reporting for law enforcement.
Canton, Mich., has contracted with Victoria, B.C.-based Municipal Software for software to automate its Municipal Services Department including Planning Services, Building and Inspection Services and Public Works Division.

Milwaukee and Milwaukee County, Wis., have received the 2005 Innovation Award for Intergovernmental Cooperation from the Milwaukee, Wis.-based Public Policy Forum.
Woodridge, Ill.-based V3 has received an Honor Award from the Springfield, Ill.-based Consulting Engineering Council of Illinois for work on the Interstate I-74 Reconstruction in Peoria.
Fairfax County, Va., has received the Homeland Security Center Award from the Fairfax, Va.-based Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board for a geographic information system-enabled emergency response system.
O’Hara, Pa., Township Fire Marshal George Sacco, 93, has received the Silent Defender Award from the Falls Church, Va.-based International Code Council Foundation for his lifetime commitment to fire safety and prevention.
Seward, Alaska, has received the All-American City Award from the Atlanta-based National Civic League.
Florida Government Utility has received Safety and Operational Excellence awards from the Tallahassee-based Florida Water Environment Association for six wastewater treatment facilities.
