Unregulated organizations, financed by rich individuals and special interest groups, are flooding the pre-election airwaves with rhetoric. Named after the section of the IRS code that defines them, 527s are not beholden to the Federal Election Commission and can accept unlimited donations from any source so long as they don’t endorse one candidate, according to the Los Angeles Times. The groups, made famous by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in the 2004 presidential election, have spent almost $300 million nationwide to push a number of issues in the upcoming midterm elections.
