On May 13, 2006, San José, Calif., opened the newly combined Almaden Library and Community Center, which includes twice as much library space and 10 times more community center space as its predecessors. The $17.5 million center, designed by San Francisco-based Field Paoli Architects, unites the formerly separate buildings into one 65,000-square-foot facility. The library features an Internet café, study areas and a technology lab. The two community center wings house a computer lab, an aerobic/dance studio, a game room and a community room, which can accommodate up to 500 people. The San José Public Library and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services co-manage the facility.
