The 31,000 residents of Highland Park, Ill., now have access to a free email alert service from the local police department. More than 660 people have registered for the system, which allows police to communicate crime and emergency information via personal computers, cell phones, and electronic organizers.
Experts say the service is increasingly being offered by law enforcement across the nation. The first few crime alerts sent managed to generate a lead from a Wisconsin police department.
