Versatile Robot Joins Marion Sheriff’s Office Ranks
The Marion County, Fl., Sheriff’s Office has used funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to purchase a $190,000, 800-pound multipurpose robot capable of disposing of bombs.
The robot, which can also be used to help provide security at airports, joins six other robots that are being used by law enforcement agencies in Florida.
The robot is capable of rescuing incapacitated people, firing a shotgun, carrying a “throw” phone for hostage situations, and pulling a vehicle. It allows officers to view situations remotely via television cameras, is capable of climbing stairs, and operates well on most surfaces and in all types of weather.
The robot can also be used to conduct nuclear surveillance and maintenance, as it is capable of handling hazardous materials.
