New York’s biggest and longest-running public works project, the $6 billion Water Tunnel No. 3, reached a milestone this week with the completion of excavation for the second of four stages. Work on the tunnel began in 1970 and has been stopped several times since then due to a lack of money, according to The New York Times. The completion of the second stage, an 8.5-mile section between Midtown and Lower Manhattan, will almost double the city’s water supply.
