Advanced technology lets one engine run on various fuels
FlexDI technology allows an engine to burn various fuels, while requiring only minor hardware and calibration changes to the engine. To meet the military’s one-fuel policy, the technology has been applied to military outboard, ATV and UAV products to enable spark ignition operation with fuels such as JP5 and JP8. Current projects include using the technology to reduce engine emissions of personal watercraft and scooters. Also enables automotive manufacturers to develop one engine and handle different fuel types through simple changes to the fuel system. Expands the potential for gasoline, ethanol, methanol, CNG and hydrogen systems to be installed in the same base engine. Aids development of future fuels that meet emission requirements and boost engine efficiency. Orbital Corp. Ltd., Lapeer, Mich.
