National County Government Month to focus on veterans’ services
The theme for National County Government Month (NCGM) next April is “Serving Our Veterans, Armed Forces and Their Families,” according to the National Association of Counties’ (NACo) President Glen Whitley. NACo began NCGM in 1991 to encourage counties to actively promote county government services and programs.
Counties are encouraged to link the theme to NCGM activities, which can include holding public tours of county facilities; talking to students, community organizations and business leaders about county programs and services; holding essay and art contests; and sponsoring County Family Day events. Counties also can organize media events, ask county officials to write newspaper columns, or schedule guest appearances by county officials on local radio and TV shows to discuss new county programs or highlight existing ones, according to Whitley.
“This year’s NCGM theme is important and timely as more veterans, military service members and their families are turning to their county government for services,” Whitley said in his statement. NACo plans to release a booklet in early 2011 with ideas for a variety of ways counties can celebrate NCGM.
