Beware the guard chicken
Kevin Hoag, producer-director for Hillsborough County, Fla.'s government television station, took this photo of county Mosquito Control General Manager Donny Hayes checking a bird from the Sentinel Chicken Flock in Northeastern Hillsborough County. The chicken's blood will be tested for diseases such as West Nile Virus and Encephalitis and, if the test is positive, the county's Mosquito Control department targets a specific area for treatment.

If the birds do test positive they are retired to live out the rest of their lives on an adoptive farm.
