Stop your motors running
Myrtle Beach, S.C., officials are rebels with a cause: No more Bike Week! For many years, the seaside community has been the center of a rumbling tsunami of bikers from across the country every fall and spring, and, since 1990, the city has been dealing with the noise, litter, congestion and traffic safety issues that accompany the events. As a result, the city council passed an ordinance that took effect last month that could hold sponsors of unpermitted special events financially responsible for the public’s cost of cleaning up afterward. “The city council does not believe that the encouragement and continuation of these events and rallies is in the best long-term economic interest of the city of Myrtle Beach in developing a sustainable and family oriented tourist trade,” the ordinance states.
