DHS opens application period for SAFER Grant program
The Department of Homeland Security has opened the application process for the 2007 round of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant program. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. EDT, Aug. 31, according to the Fairfax, Va.-based International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).
Congress has appropriated $115 million for the current round of SAFER grants, which can be used to fund the hiring of professional firefighters and the training and retention of volunteer firefighters. Some changes have been made to the program this year, and IAFC is providing assistance and information at www.firegrantsupport.com.
