New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has started a publicity campaign to gather support for giving permanent control of the city’s school system to the mayor. A 2002 law gave Bloomberg control over the system, which he then reformed, according to The New York Times. Bloomberg says that if the law expires in 2009 as planned the schools could revert to their previous problems, but some officials say the law should be tweaked to give the public more input and to reduce the mayor’s power.
