The developer of New York’s $4.2 billion Atlantic Yards housing project plans to cut the size of the complex by up to 8 percent in response to growing complaints from neighbors of the proposed Brooklyn project. Gov. George Pataki and Mayor Michael Bloomberg support the project, but critics say its basketball arena, 6,000 apartments, high-rise towers and hotel would overwhelm the nearby neighborhoods, according to The New York Times. Among the compromises proposed by developer Forest City Ratner is to reduce the height of Atlantic Yards’ tallest building so it is the same height as Brooklyn’s tallest building, the nearby Williamsburgh Savings Bank tower.
