New Jersey’s governor and legislators have reached a compromise on the state’s $32 billion budget that will end a six-day government shutdown. While Gov. Jon Corzine and the state’s lawmakers wrangled over Corzine’s plan to raise the sales tax from 6 to 7 percent, more than 45,000 state employees had to be furloughed, according to The New York Times. Another 50,000 employees at Atlantic City’s 12 casinos were kept home from work due to a lack of state inspectors. The shutdown cost the state millions of dollars.
